At Draycott engineering in Didcot, we stock a large range of tyres for all vehicles. You need to check your tyre tread to prevent depth falling below the legal limit of 1.6mm. You should also consider that new tyres have around 6-8mm of tread and as that tread depth decreases, so can tyre performance, and vehicle handling. Tyres should last roughly around 25,000 miles. Also consider changing between winter and summer tyres.

We offer same day or next day fitting service depending on the time of your enquiry. Call us today at Draycott engineering Didcot, for a speedy and reliable tyre fitting service here in Didcot.

How to check your tyres.

Testing your tread depth:

The best way to test your tyres is to use a calibrated tyre gauge.

• Place the gauge into the tyre’s groove.

• The gauge shows you how close your tyres are from reaching the    required minimum depth for your vehicle.

• Check the tyre tread regularly and at different places round the tyre so you can keep an eye out for worn tyres and spot any early signs of uneven tread.

If your tyres don't have tread wear indicators, then you can test them with the 20p. The outer rim of a 20p coin is just short 3mm wide.

• Place a 20p coin into tyre tread grooves.

• If the outer rim of the coin is obscured then your tyre's are above the legal minimum tread.

• If you can see part of the of the coin rim then it's time to check your tyres more carefully using a proper tyre tread depth gauge.

Driving with a low tyre tread

Driving on tyres with tread below the legal limit can be incredibly dangerous, as well as illegal. It’s even worse driving with bald tyres where the tread has worn away altogether.

Hazards of driving with worn tyres include:

• Less grip on road surfaces.

• Can cause damage to the vehicle.

• Less traction on icy and snowy roads surfaces.

• More chance of flat tyres, which could lead to a sudden blowout.
