Dunlop tyres - Draycott Engineering - Didcot - Oxfordshire
John Boyd Dunlop, a Scottish veterinarian, glued on the tyres of his son's tricycle in 1888 with air-filled thin rubber strips and thus made the first step towards a brand that has launched some of the world's best products on the market. Seeing how much better the tricycle did with the "light" rubber tyre, Dunlop decided to switch jobs and founded Dunlop. The first plant was founded in Ireland in 1892, and the first foreign branch opened in Hanau, Germany, just one year later. Dunlop developed, among other things, the first tyre with metal rivets (1908), the precursor of the tyre with spikes. In 1922, Dunlop first extended the life of the tyre by three times by incorporating cord fabric into the tyre cover. In 1959, Dunlop introduced its first lamella profile, and the following year, researchers discovered a hitherto unknown phenomenon - aquaplaning. Thanks to this discovery, the development of tyres that reduce the risk of aquaplaning could be started in the following years. In 1999, several Goodyear and Dunlop tyre companies in the US, Japan and Europe were merged into an alliance between "Goodyear Tyre & Rubber Company of the USA" and "Sumitomo Rubber Industries of Japan". Six new joint venture companies were founded.
