Keep Your Vehicle in Good Health From Only £99 (Plus VAT)
At Draycott Engineering in Didcot, we stock a wide range of tyres for all vehicle types. It’s important to regularly check your tyre tread to ensure it doesn’t fall below the legal limit of 1.6mm. Keep in mind that new tyres typically have a tread depth of around 6-8mm, and as the tread wears down, both tyre performance and vehicle handling can be affected. On average, tyres should last around 25,000 miles. You should also consider switching between winter and summer tyres for optimal performance.
We offer same-day or next-day fitting, depending on the time of your enquiry. Contact us today at Draycott Engineering in Didcot for a fast and reliable tyre fitting service.
Driving With A Low Tyre Tread
Driving on tyres with tread below the legal limit can be extremely dangerous and is also illegal. It’s even more concerning when driving with bald tyres, where the tread has worn away completely.
Hazards of driving with worn tyres include reduced grip on road surfaces, which can affect your ability to control the vehicle. Worn tyres can also cause damage to the vehicle and make it harder to drive on icy or snowy road surfaces. Additionally, the risk of flat tyres increases, which could potentially lead to a sudden blowout.
How To Check Your Tyres
Testing Your Tread Depth
The best way to test your tyres is to use a calibrated tyre gauge.
- Place the gauge into the tyres groove.
- The gauge shows you how close your tyres are from reaching the required minimum depth for your vehicle.
- Check the tyre tread regularly and at different places round the tyre so you can keep an eye out for worn tyres and spot any early signs of uneven tread.
If your tyres don’t have tread wear indicators, then you can test them with the 20p. The outer rim of a 20p coin is just short 3mm wide.
- Place a 20p coin into tyre tread grooves.
- If the outer rim of the coin is obscured then your tyre's are above the legal minimum tread.
- If you can see part of the coin rim then it's time to check your tyres more carefully using a proper tyre tread depth gauge.
